Contraception is no stroll in the park and men should share the stress

On a side note, all the stock pictures of women and implants are of white women

I have a new piece up on Comment is free. Its about a recent scandal in which contraceptive implants have become lost in women's bodies, and problems with the contraceptive market more generally. And the global pharmaceutical industry. And gender: Contraception is no stroll in the park and men should share the stress

  1. Inequality exists not only on the preventing babies side, but also in the having them. Around one in six couples have trouble conceiving, male factors being important in around 50% of cases - but the only really effective treatment, IVF, is highly invasive to the woman; in essence, one has to treat the woman for the man's problem.

That said, sperm motility research is coming on, so to speak.

  2. Hi Ray, really interesting post and I couldn't agree with you more. The issue of inequalities in access (and experience) to healthcare services that women in the UK experience, isn't really talked about, or is seen as a non-issue most of the time. I think this is actually quite worrying when you probe a little deeper, as some quite pervasive and dangerous problems do exists. For example, women are more likely to visit their GP multiple times with 'cancer symptoms' before they are referred to a specialist. I've just started blogging about this issue if you're interested: http://claireycontrary.blogspot.co.uk/
